Koen Doodeman
Lightleak - KOI
2024 | acrylics on cotton, handwoven | 190 × 130 cm
What’s real and what isn’t? That’s exactly what Koen Doodeman toys with in his work, which he does by creating different layers.
Such as in the Lightleak series, where he starts by digitally editing his photographs using what's called a ‘light leak filter’ to simulate the effect of too much light. He divides the edited photograph into five fields of colour. Then he paints threads with acrylic ink in each of those colours and weaves them together using a special method. The artist thus combines a textile approach with a painterly perspective.
The Scottish tartan is a recurring visual element that he creates with a chequer pattern of overlapping lines: reference to the structure of textile, i.e. his use of materials. The material itself and the creative process are what matter most to this artist. Subject matter is of minor importance to him.
