In this work, Michaël Berkhemer has his proportions as well as his painting styles in balance.
This painting shows a clear connection with the work of Piet Mondrian, known for his abstract geometric painting. But Berkhemer was also a great admirer of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. Their influence can be seen in the thin, visible brushstrokes and illusion of light in the black and crimson blocks.
