Born in 1953 in South Africa and raised during apartheid, Marlène Dumas has always been intrigued by role patterns and prejudices.
In her early work, Dumas used a collage technique where she would recycle her large collection of images, from film stills and pornography to police photos and art reproductions, and mix them with painting and drawing to create meaning.
