Self-Portrait 2002 No. 69

2002 | oil paint on board | 40 × 35 cm

Philip Akkerman has one policy: I paint myself, and so I paint the whole of humankind.

In 1981, Akkerman embarked on a project of self-portraits. This has enabled him to explore the infinite variations of a single individual – himself – in search of something universal. In this visual diary, he sees each new painting as a triumph over the problems he saw when he looked in the mirror.
