Sink

1970 | oil paint on canvas | 50 × 70 cm

Har Sanders paints what most overlook in their day-to-day existence – such as this granite sink with copper drain – in excruciating, glorious detail. He makes his subjects larger than life.

Sanders paints in a style known as Hyperrealism: his work resembles a high-resolution photograph. Hyperrealism has developed in the United States and Europe since the early 1970s. When Sanders sees something he would fancy painting, he strips away whatever he considers unnecessary and zooms in on the detail. What remains is its essence.
