Imagine a house full of toys, each of which recalls the youth of artist Maurice van Es. During his time at the Rijksakademie (2017-2018), he collected the toys that he played with as a child and also discovered some new favourites. As this colourful collection spread through his home, Van Es captured it in his Toys From My Youth series, where he invites us to see through his eyes and experience the magic of these everyday objects. Each toy tells a story, evokes nostalgic memories and makes us think about the fleetingness of time and the beauty of the little everyday things in life. His work is all about the love expressed by parents towards their children – often in the form of plastic. At the same time, however, he also wants to show the other side: is plastic really that loving when you think about the future?
