The Fall of Icarus II

1970 | oil paint on canvas | 69 × 69 cm

As the title of this work suggests, Aat Verhoog has a thing for rule-breakers.

In Greek mythology, Icarus fell into the sea when the wax in his man-made wings melted after he disobeyed his father and flew too close to the sun. Verhoog reminds us that art would not be art if artists had not constantly broken its rules.
