Reinier Lucassen (1939)
The Magic of an Object
1977 | oil paint on canvas | 100 × 100 cm
When it comes to art, Reinier Lucassen has an interesting policy: if you have to choose what to paint, why not go for what most people consider bad taste?
And while you’re at it, why not also go for something that, at least to him, determines much of life? In this painting, for instance, we see two faces and a giant ‘matchstick’ with a rainbow in the background. It’s by boldly embracing what others see as unreal, kitsch or cliché that Lucassen is able to keep his art young and fresh.
