The Trial

1978 | watercolour | 45 × 60 cm

Intellectual and artist Constant (Constant Nieuwenhuijs) wanted to create art for the people, where there would be no difference between beautiful and ugly.

Constant was one of the founders of the CoBrA group of artists from Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands, in 1948. They sought to free themselves from the reining rules of art at that time. The text in this painting is by French poet Baudelaire, known for coining the word ‘modernity’.
