Frans Clement (1941)
Untitled
1982 | oil paint on canvas | 196 × 156 cm
Frans Clement transforms the modern street scene with its kerbs and stray rubbish – details which we all take for granted – from the setting of daily life into the main subject of his work.
After seeing an exhibition on Photorealism in 1972, Clement fell under the spell of the artistic movement from the USA and continues to work in that tradition to this very day. By cropping and playing with perspective and lighting, the artist creates his own reality of alienating beauty where he rises above mere imitation.
