When we see a familiar sign or symbol in art – or life in general – how do we know that we’re receiving the right message?
What was Dutch artist Bram van Velde trying to tell us with this ‘X’? Would it help to know that he lived as a pauper in Paris during the Second World War, or that the theme of his work since the 1960s was a colourful labyrinth without beginning or end?
