Rob Scholte (1958)
Venus Nostalgia
1988 | silkscreen print on linen | 80 × 115 cm
In a day and age when almost anything can be reproduced, should we even bother talking about whether something is ‘original’?
The newspaper article in this work questions the originality of Rob Scholte’s Utopia, which was a copy of Édouard Manet’s Olympia (1860s), but with a wooden puppet replacing the nude woman in the original. Olympia itself was modelled after Titian's Venus of Urbino, from around 1530.
