ING Talent Award 2018
The ING Talent Award is an international, purpose-driven initiative that gives new photography talent from Europe a united platform to present their work on a global scale.
In 2018, the theme was New Horizons: Exploring the Promise and Perils of the Future.
Jury Prize winner
Jaakko Kahilaniemi won the ING Talent Award Jury Prize for his work Nature Like Capital. Kahilaniemi received the €10,000 grand prize to invest in his future projects and further his artistic career. The jury selected Kahilaniemi because they felt he really embraced the year’s theme. They were also impressed by how his intriguing work effectively communicated ideas around man’s complex relationship with nature. To tackle one of the most important political themes of our time, Nature Like Capital takes a multi-layered approach, influenced by the Land Art movement and an exploration of photographic form within a personal narrative.
Public Prize winner
Alexey Shlyk won the Public Prize and received a commission to create a new work for the ING Collection. Shlyk’s work explored the year’s theme in a playful and optimistic way.
The finalists were coached by internationally acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Isaac Julien for two weeks while they created their new work for the ING Collection.
The Jury Prize winner was selected by five experts:
- Chris Bedson (senior art director, Calvin Klein)
- Emma Bowkett (FT Weekend Magazine)
- Fiona Tan (artist and filmmaker)
- Florian Ebner (chief of photography, Pompidou Centre)
- Sanne ten Brink (head curator, ING Collection)
The 2021 shortlist made by ING Art Management and Unseen, is based on a longlist selected by Futures. The contemporary photography platform that pools resources and talent programs from leading photo institutions in Europe.
