The stripes in Daniel Buren’s work aren’t meant to signify anything or evoke any particular emotion. Which makes it all the more surprising that he found his inspiration for them in Paris.

Buren says his works are all about broadening of our field of vision. Because they depict nothing but monotonous stripes, they divert our gaze to the space around the painting. And if they happen to recall the canopy of a Parisian bistro, it’s because Buren got the idea for his stripes while walking through a textile market in the French capital city.
