For Robert Rauschenberg, art had to reflect the world around us. So, what better way than to pick it up off the street.
As early as the 1950s, Rauschenberg turned away from the abstract art prevalent in the United States then and started making his Combines, a group of artworks that incorporated found objects. The title of this work reiterates how Rauschenberg would embrace chance occurrences: he signed the series in a hotel room with a view of a runway.
