Gerti Bierenbroodspot (1940)
Mask
2006 | bronze | 40 × 21 × 8 cm
Trained as a painter, Gerti Bierenbroodspot also joined archaeological digs, where she could feel the past with her own hands.
That’s when she became fascinated by lost techniques and materials. She has even developed new paints based on old formulas. While her images are modelled after deities from mythology, she always finds a way to connect them to the present, such as in this mask with its applied jewellery and coquettish face powder.
