The Food Chain Project & 240 Plaster surrogates

1988 | Enamel and hydrostone | 120 x 856 cm

Despite the similarities, each of these 240 Plaster Surrogates is unique, either because of their colour, dimensions or way they are arranged.

Since the end of the 1960s, Allan McCollum has critically questioned painting, sculpture and photography and the very notion of a work of art and a unique object. With these substitutes for paintings, he wants us to be ‘consciously’ surprised in our desire to look at art.
