Matthijs Röling (1943)
Autumn
1976 | oil paint on canvas | 87 × 77 cm
Never mind the plums and chanterelles, the subject of this still life is Johannes Vermeer, not the autumn.
Vermeer’s name is painted in blue letters on the cupboard, and in the lower right-hand corner Matthijs Röling has included a postcard of Vermeer's The Art of Painting. By placing a painting within a painting, Autumn pays a double tribute: to the art of painting and to the seventeenth-century master to whom Röling feels so connected.
