Difficult Amsterdammers

1975 | oil paint on canvas | 95 × 127 cm

Bursting with colour and with its bold lines, the work of Anton Rooskens reveals an exciting mixture of influences from the world over.

Originally painting in the style of Vincent van Gogh, Rooskens was later influenced by the simple, powerful images found in folk art, with a sprinkling of cubism. Rooskens had a keen interest in ethnography and made many trips to Africa, the United States, the Far East and Greenland.
