Full Moon

1992 | tempera on paper with gold leaf | 45 × 37 cm

In her tempera paintings, Hester Schroor gets under her own skin and the skin of her subject. Is it her power of imagination, or can she really see things that we cannot?

In this work, Schroor’s approach leads to an almost ghostly depiction of reality. The women painted by Schroor are often accompanied by an animal, which becomes part of the painting in its own special way. Death and mortality are recurring themes. The use of gold leaf in this work brings in the light of the moon from its title.
