Group Portrait with Paper Hat

1995 | oil paint on panel | 120 × 120 cm

Children with an intellectual disability are often the subject of Douwe Elias’s paintings. He is drawn to their openness and sense of humour.

Elias’s paintings of children with a disability are based on photographs of school trips that his father took with his pupils. Although this work may look a little sloppy, Elias uses bold colour to distinguish clearly between each individual in the group. The painting also demonstrates the artist’s keen use of light. It accentuates not only the paper hats worn by the boys but also their facial expressions, which Elias portrays with compassion.
