In this work by Kik Zeiler, we see the Dutch artist Bernardien Sternheim (1948) leaning on the bar with a faraway look on her face.
She is deep in thought, which is something Zeiler loves to work with: it allows him to capture the inner person of his models. The other figures are alone with their thoughts and emotions. Zeiler has included his own self-portrait on the diagonal behind Sternheim. The man sitting at the back to the right is the only one who communicates with us through his eyes. He holds a pencil, as if he were just about to sketch this night-time gathering.
