The figures in Barend Blankert’s paintings are sometimes portrayed in such isolation from others – and from the viewer – they look like part of a still life.
That can certainly be said of the anonymous man in this painting. Resting face-down so we cannot see his eyes, and with a funnel-like hat, his head becomes part of the composition of objects. His jacket follows the folds of the prominent damask tablecloth and almost forms a corner of the table.
