Andy Warhol (1928-1987)
Portrait of Mohammad Ali
1978 | silk-screen print | 120 × 90 cm
When Muhammad Ali posed for Warhol in 1977, it gave the boxer the same cult status as Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, who had been posthumously portrayed by the father of Pop Art previously.
Warhol was well aware of this new popularity. As he himself put it, "I said that the athletes were better than movie stars and I don’t know what I’m talking about because athletes are the new movie stars."
