Dick Ket (1902-1940)
St. Nicholas Still Life
1931 | oil paint on canvas | 82 × 61 cm
Producing his best work in the 1930s, Dick Ket often found deeper meaning in simple household objects, which he painted in his still lifes.
Partly because of a heart condition, Ket was confined to his family home, which became his world. The title of this painting comes from the horse ridden by Saint Nicolas on the poster for chocolates in the background. The wooden marionette horse in the still life symbolises Ket’s personal situation.
