Jan van Tongeren (1897-1991)
Still Life with Chinese Teapot
1975 | oil paint on canvas | 59 × 69 cm
Van Tongeren sought to create a connection among the simple jugs, kettles and pitchers in his paintings, or as he himself put it: "to make them family to each other."
In this still life, he achieves this effect by his use of colour. He avoids stark contrasts. And by painting the chair and the background the same colour of blue, Van Tongeren creates a connection between them: an optical whole.
