Jan van Tongeren (1897-1991)

Still Life with White Jug and Chair

1967 | oil paint on canvas | 54 × 64 cm

The objects in this painting had personal meaning to Van Tongeren: they reminded him of the simple life during his youth in the Veluwe, a forest area in the Netherlands.

Jan van Tongeren’s work went through great change in his 55 years of painting still lifes of everyday objects. In imitation of the Magic Realism art movement, Van Tongeren's paintings in the 1930s and 1940s had an almost photographic look to them. Later, he treated his subjects purely as form and colour, leading to his highly abstract still lifes in the 1980s.
