The Eastern Bride

2000 | bronze | 28 × 16 × 20 cm

Tony van de Vorst aims for a sense of tranquillity and meditation in her work. It took her nearly a year to get The Eastern Bride just right.

Van der Vorst initially modelled this work on Japanese women, because of their ingenious hairstyles. But in the end, Chinese movie star Gong Li became the inspiration for The Eastern Bride. Van de Vorst felt her face had the right personality and melancholic expression.
