Gé-Karel van der Sterren (1969)
Untitled
2006 | acrylic and oil paint on panel | 190 × 145 cm
With nothing but a tablecloth snapping on a clothesline in a courtyard, the contrasts between dark and light in this painting create the effect of a photo negative.
The ominous cloud of smoke squeezing up from the roof could just as easily be a cloud in a sunny sky. What a clever way for Gé-Karel van der Sterren to demonstrate how his choice of colours affects our sense of perception.
