Wieuwerd Railway Crossing

1993 | drawing/charcoal | 77 × 155 cm

Pieter Pander is mainly known as a painter of people and animals, but it’s in his drawings that we really get a feel for what he wants to communicate.

These detailed, large-scale works are made up of different gradations of black. The varying thickness of the lines, and their contrast with the white space, creates a certain tension. This drawing of a railway crossing in the north of the Netherlands invites us to linger over the details in the foreground and then follow the lines into the distance and experience the vast space.
