Katinka Lampe’s art is characterised by her soft yet mysterious portraits. Although the people in her paintings certainly look realistic enough, they’re not intended as an accurate representation. Instead, Lampe sees these figures as visual impressions that, once transformed through her eyes, come to symbolise broader themes in society.

Lampe often uses accessories with a strong connotation to loosely characterise themes and moods. The roles she gives her models and their poses, expressions and clothes – often copied from magazines, the internet or old masterpieces – mask their personality and evoke deeper subjective meanings in the viewer. This is the artist’s basis for exploring important social issues like identity, ageing, colour and our growing dependence on the media.
