Barend Blankert (1941-2023)
Earthly Paradise
1995 | acrylic, alkyd, oil paint on canvas | 180 × 215 cm
In The Earthly Paradise, Blankert's themes of loneliness, alienation, failed communication and social isolation all come to the fore.
There is no interaction between the withdrawn man and the naked woman in this painting. Each is isolated in his or her own world and seems intensely lonely, while a reproduction on the wall in the background tells a traditional biblical tale. The dog under the table looks confused.
