1933 | oil paint on canvas | 95 × 128 cm

Wim Schuhmacher is often bracketed together with the artists of Magic Realism because of the dream-like quality of his paintings. That’s where the similarity ends, however.

Unlike in Magic Realism, Schuhmacher’s choice of themes is less unexpected, and his work lacks the ominous atmosphere associated with the artistic movement. His portrait of Adine Mees is a good example. Schuhmacher portrays her in the sand dunes, gently resting against a white pillow, with a look of admiration in her eyes.
