Rigodon III
2003 | oil paint on board | 50 × 122 cm
The title of this work by Erik de Jong refers to a traditional type of dance where a lot goes on without changing places.
A rigaudon (rigodon or rigaudon in French) is a folk dance from southern France that became popular as a court dance during the reign of Louis XIV. Its hopping steps are performed while standing in one place. In Rigodon III, we see seven Frenchmen in a landscape. De Jong paints people mainly in a moment of rest, but the exact meaning of his work is elusive.
