Matthijs Röling (1943)
Summer
1976 | oil paint on canvas | 87 × 77 cm
This still life with glistening cherries and wide open poppies has the red glow of the setting summer sun.
All of Matthijs Röling's objects have form and substance, as if their weight would leave an impression in your hand if you were to pick them up. At the same time, their arrangement in the painting is casual and playful. Röling believes a work of art should look like it painted itself. Yet behind this seeming effortlessness lies a keen understanding of the traditional aspects of painting.
